This article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb205075%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#Enumeration shows, how to enumerate display adapters and adapter outputs. I understand, that minimal requirements are: DirectX 10, Windows 7.
I want to know, whether similar functionality is available for Windows XP, using DirectX 10 or previous DirectX versions.

On D3D9 these are all members of the IDirect3D9 interface. Look in your SDK documentation for GetAdapterCount and EnumAdapterModes. There are a few other handy adapter-related calls that you can see from looking at the SDK page for IDirect3D9. D3D9 doesn't have a concept of an "output" so there's no equivalent.

On D3D10 you'd use an IDXGIFactory too.
