I've been trying to figure out how to setup DirectX to wok correctly in my Metro style app. My engine has a rgular Win32 implementation of a DirectX driver, calling the C functions, checking HRESULTs, etc. But it looks like the Windows 8 way is to use the new ComPtr to manage everyting. I don't want to write a seperate Windows 7/Vista driver, and have to maintain both the old version's driver, and the WINRT version. Is there any way to use DirectX like normal, an only have to change the initialization code?

From what I have heard, it is possible to make a parallel implementation, but its not trivial. I haven't done it myself, but there are several different people getting tutorials set up for exactly this topic... If you find some good info, post it here, because I want to read it!

For a start, can I still use old style management of COM objects in DirectX without using that awful new Wrl::ComPtr? That would be at least the beginning of a paralell implementation.
