interleaved translation matrices

Hello all,

I was reading through the achives on the opengl website and i came accrouse this when looking at an explination of how to set up 2d controls in your Opengl program.

"Normally, the ModelView matrix is set to the identity when drawing 2D controls, though you may find it convenient to do otherwise (for example, you can draw repeated controls with interleaved translation matrices)."

I am not understanding this part about "repeated controls with interleaved translation matrices"

What is repeated controls?

and what is "Interleaved translation matrices"?
