For 2D graphics rendering, which one (D3D or D2D) should I use?

I've just learned some D3D programming and my current job is to write a graphics editing application that use DirectX for 2D graphics rendering. Is it necessary to learn Direct2D to get the work done, or which one should I use for 2D graphics rendering? Direct3D or Direct2D?Thanks.

2D is just a special case of 3D; you can do 2D in any 3D API by using an ortho projection and/or by giving everything the same fixed value of Z.

You can also interoperate between D2D and D3D (with a bit of hassle). D2D provides some stuff (like complex 2D shape rasterization) that the D3D core doesn't.

That's correct too. You can really just pick whichever suits you the best based on the requirements of the program and your own knowledge (and whether or not learning D2D is something you want to do right now).
