What do people think of Texture Anti-Aliasing (glAArg)?

What are your thoughts on this technique?

I think it's a really cool technique that gets great results. I'm a little surprised by the fact that it seems relevant even today, despite being really old. I think it can be used for some UI or vector-graphics rendering code in OpenGL, where precise and consistent anti-aliasing is a heavy requirement.

I'm also a little worried that it will die off and become unavailable soon, since there is no support for it.

Or am I wrong, and is there a newer modern technique that supersedes glAArg completely, making it useless and no longer necessary?

[b]My question is this: [/b]Is glAArg a gem that's worth holding onto and developing further, or is it best to forget about it and use technology/technique X to get the same results?

Antialiasing is not a so simple problem. Probably that feature will be usefull for someone (never directly needed that). But forcing video cards vendors to add that feature will be a hard hit for them (some of them). In last years OpenGL (as well dX) evolved thanks to new chances given by newest hardware. So it is more like Hardware->API Specifications than API Specifications->hardare (just my silly opinion).

Newest vendors (if any) have to follow specifications, but those specifications are made also thanks to specific features old vendors have "invented". (Who is using OpenGL ES for example have to follow ES specifications, but those specifications was made apposite for light devices keeping in mind their limited hardware).

I just read over the article. It’s no surprise at all that FSAA performance worse, since it is quite a brute force way to anti-alias something. [img]http://public.gamedev.net//public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png[/img]

A very effective way to anti-alias primitives is to use MSAA (or one of its variants like CSAA). With freeglut it’s enabled with just one line. You can have influence on the sampling rate per pixel and can even alter the coverage mask. It also goes well with alpha2coverage (which once has been used to anti-alias leaves and trunks in the speed tree renderer, if I recall correctly).

If we talk about deferred rendering of scenes with heavy fragment shaders, SRAA and the stuff Andrew Lauritzen did in the tile-based deferred rendering come into play (dynamically increase the sampling rate if edges are present).

If we get back to 2D and UIs, I think, most critical with Texture AA is that it needs texture fetches, which are usually quite expensive (a few hundred cycles in case of a cache-miss). I’m having the feeling that rendering a triangle with MSAA is faster than a textured single-sampled triangle. If the primitives are textured anyway, then Texture AA seems to be nothing more than texturing with mip mapped textures – a thing we always do, not only for anti-aliasing but also to increase performance (due to a better cache coherence).

I can’t say for sure, whether MSAA is always a better choice for smoothing edges of primitives, since I didn’t benchmark both approaches. This should clearly be done to make an informed choice. Though, I have a feeling in my stomach that MSAA might be better. [img]http://public.gamedev.net//public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png[/img]

But I don't think MSAA achieves the same final result quality, does it? So even if it's faster, it might not be an appropriate replacement.

True, it depends on the number of samples. Since Texture AA is pre-computed and can use as many samples as it wants, it will have better quality than let’s say 4xMSAA (or any other dynamic approach, does it?). It would be interesting to see at which number of samples the difference isn’t noticeable anymore.

Still, good to have a fallback solution in case one needs better performance, right? [img]http://public.gamedev.net//public/style_emoticons/default/wink.png[/img]

      Hello, I have been working on SH Irradiance map rendering, and I have been using a GLSL pixel shader to render SH irradiance to 2D irradiance maps for my static objects. I already have it working with 9 3D textures so far for the first 9 SH functions.
      In my GLSL shader, I have to send in 9 SH Coefficient 3D Texures that use RGBA8 as a pixel format. RGB being used for the coefficients for red, green, and blue, and the A for checking if the voxel is in use (for the 3D texture solidification shader to prevent bleeding).
      My problem is, I want to knock this number of textures down to something like 4 or 5. Getting even lower would be a godsend. This is because I eventually plan on adding more SH Coefficient 3D Textures for other parts of the game map (such as inside rooms, as opposed to the outside), to circumvent irradiance probe bleeding between rooms separated by walls. I don't want to reach the 32 texture limit too soon. Also, I figure that it would be a LOT faster.
      Is there a way I could, say, store 2 sets of SH Coefficients for 2 SH functions inside a texture with RGBA16 pixels? If so, how would I extract them from inside GLSL? Let me know if you have any suggestions ^^.

      Hey guys, whenever I call SwapBuffers(hDC), I get a crash, and I get a "Too many posts were made to a semaphore." from Windows as I call SwapBuffers. What could be the cause of this?
      Update: No crash occurs if I don't draw, just clear and swap.

      I've been working on a OpenGL ES 2.0 android engine and I have begun implementing some simple (point) lighting. I had something fairly simple working, so I tried to get fancy and added color-tinting light. And it works great... with only one or two lights. Any more than that, the application drops about 15 frames per light added (my ideal is at least 4 or 5). I know implementing lighting is expensive, I just didn't think it was that expensive. I'm fairly new to the world of OpenGL and GLSL, so there is a good chance I've written some crappy shader code. If anyone had any feedback or tips on how I can optimize this code, please let me know.

      Not sure to post at the right place, if not, please forgive me...
      For a game project I am working on, I would like to implement a 2D starfield as a background.
      I do not want to deal with static tiles, since I plan to slowly animate the starfield. So, I am trying to figure out how to generate a random starfield for the entire map.
      I feel that using a uniform distribution for the stars will not do the trick. Instead I would like something similar to the screenshot below, taken from the game Star Wars: Empire At War (all credits to Lucasfilm, Disney, and so on...).

      Is there someone who could have an idea of a distribution which could result in such a starfield?
      Any insight would be appreciated

      I have just noticed that, in quake 3 and half - life, dynamic models are effected from light map. For example in dark areas, gun that player holds seems darker. How did they achieve this effect ? I can use image based lighting techniques however (Like placing an environment probe and using it for reflections and ambient lighting), this tech wasn't used in games back then, so there must be a simpler method to do this.
      Here is a link that shows how modern engines does it. Indirect Lighting Cache It would be nice if you know a paper that explains this technique. Can I apply this to quake 3' s light map generator and bsp format ?
