I've been trying to load some .obj files that I found on this site. I think the lines with v on them are probably vertex co-ordinates, but what are the lines that start with f for. Do I need to use them?

You can check the file format specifications on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavefront_.obj_file

the f stands for the face, which holds the indices to the vertices (and depending also the tex coords and normals) so yes, you will need those.
