[DI8] Joystick Polling

For the most part, I'm running a console window so that I don't have to mess with Windows API to get some Direct Input 8 testing done, and so far, I've gotten up to the point where I'm able to actually poll the device. From there my program never actually gets control of the joystick which is shown through the HRESULT [DIERR_OTHERAPPHASPRIO] and if I try to work around it and set the cooperative level to [EXCLUSE | FOREGROUND] I get a FAILED [didevice->GetDeviceState(..)]. I've browsed through my code multiple times and everything is in working order, so now I'm beginning to wonder if it has something to do with using a console instead of an actual Windows Dialog.

I can post the tidbits that are relevant if necessary.

It seems that DI works with console application: http://www.gamedev.net/topic/159309-acquiring-directinput-with-a-console-application/
So, if you won't be able to get it working, you'll probably have to post the relevant code.
