whatever you want, get an idea and make it. Start learning how to apply physics into your games, anything. When was finally felt like a new directx really well, I made a bunch of menus for a game, and then made a simple little 3D game where you dodge random balls that are coming at you. Doesn't matter what it is, it's all beneficial to you.

Student project? PLEASE just don't try to make a game. You'll miss every deadline.

I'd agree. :P More or less to me a student project when it comes to anything gaming is multiple "projects" that you just work on certain sections of a language or section of a library. one project for physics, one for movement, enhanced graphics and etc. Then in the end try to combine them and see how it works. Seems like a good way to learn. :P
