Simplistic 2D art ->3D model question - does this tool/plugin exist?

I'm hoping someone can tell me whether or not this is doable. I have some 2D art assets, say for characters and tokens and things, and I want to make a simple 3D model of it where it looks kind of like the letters in the 20th century Fox logo - you know where the front shape is just stretched backwards some distance. Kind of like the Push/Pull tool works in Sketchup (however that only works on primitive shapes).

Does this make sense? And more importantly, does anyone know of a tool/plugin that does this?

Thanks.

Well, I believe you would outline the words with a vector tool (bezier curve or whatever your program calls it) then you would select them all and use the extrude command on them. Any moderately experienced 3D modeler should be able to do this with their program of choice unless it's something odd that lacks a vector tool or an extrude ability. It should also be possible to do it by hand by again starting with a vector outline of the words and copy/pasting it where you want the back face to go, then hilighting nodes to connect the two with faces.
