Easiest way to add text to tetris game using SDL for graphics

Hi,

I'm currently writing code for a tetris sampler which can then be used to train a tetris controller using samples of games played.

I'm not really interested in the graphical side of the game (as I will not be displaying graphics when I sampling games) but it will be extremely helpful for debugging to have a basic graphical interface.

I have found a nice and simple implementation of tetris at

and it has pretty much everything I want with the exception of writing text on to the screen. I just want to be able to write some simple statistics to the screen for debugging purposes.

What is the easiest way to obtain such functionality?
