OpenGL Movement

I am tring to follow nehes opengl tutorials and just dont understand the movement on tutorial 10.

Ok im not following it exaclty I dont want to copy and past im experimenting to learn. I am trying to take the pyramid and cube from the previos tutorials and for now just move forward and backwards.

If i use glTranslatef to change the zpos it works but only for the pyramid, glLoadIdentity is reseting it back do I have to translate the zpos before every object in the scene or am I missing something I can just call and then render or vis versa?

After some googling and reading and rereading I figured out that glpush/popmatrix does what I want. Im not sure if thats the prefered method or not if somebody would tell me im wrong or right I would be thankfull.
