PhysX sleeping actors

Can someone explain what is this sleeping process,and why does it exist?

I have never used PhysX, but i have used other physics librarys, essentially if it's the same, sleeping allows for the physic's library to skip over updating velocity's and checking for collision of objects which have come to a full stop. they are generally awoken once another object impacts them, but overall, sleeping is for increasing performance. their's no point in wasting processing power on objects that arn't doing anything.
