Simple Blur Effect

is there a simple way to blur the edges of a quad to simulate a shadow ?
Currently I've got very hard edges when I render my geometry and I would like to smooth them, the necessary condition
is that I should be able to do everything in the same fragment code I use to calculate the colour of the geometry, so no multi pass.
