Books on professional game development in C++ with OpenGL/DirectX

Hello,

I've been looking for an advanced book devoted entirely to game development in C++ using either OpenGL or DirectX. There are a few I found but they are either meant for beginners (thus explaining only the basics) or devoted entirely to DirectX/OpenGL alone. I need a book that's main focus is game development and that also explains all the advanced patterns/standards of the industry. A book, after which I should posses the theoretical knowledge of creating own engine, such as those found in the modern games.

Can anyone recommend such book? I'd appreciate any advice.

"The C++ Standard Library ~Nicolai M.Josuttis" is a very good book. It doesn't say anything about DirectX/OpenGL but it does say almost everything about Algorithms, Containers, Templates, Allocaters, Numerics, etc.

And for some "rules" and optimization of your code: "C++ Coding Standards ~Herb Sutter"

I'm learning DirectX at the moment and I have found some decent tutorials lately:

I'm not sure this includes anything about OpenGL or DirectX, but http://www.gameenginebook.com/ I've heard is a good book about Game Development and it uses C++.

Thanks a lot! Both books you mentioned have high ratings on Amazon. I'm thinking about buying [i]The C++ Standard Library[/i] - it's great it also covers C++ 11 features. I haven't read the DirectX tutorials yet but by looking at the index I think they'll be quite useful for me.

Nice. I checked the table of content of the book. It covers most of the things I'm particularly interested in. Definitely, a must-have for me.

Try Game Coding Complete 4th edition

There is also a book called OpenGL Game Programming, but I'm afraid that most of the contents in there are outdated. ( The book came out in 2002)

Great! This book is the jackpot I've been aiming for. I read some of the sample content and I'm impressed. It's great that besides the core game development topics, it also covers how to integrate Lua in C++ and how to script own development tools in C#.
