DX11 DirectX 11 Sampler States

The DX11 documentation mentions that 'CreateSamplerState' will return a handle to a current texture sampler state if the state you are trying to create is not unique.

My question is, if it returns a handle to a current sampler state, and I release it, does that invalidate everyone else's handles to that state?

No. The sampler states are referenced counted (just like all COM objects), so it won't be deleted until everybody calls Release and the ref count goes to zero.
