Game Design Theory Podcast

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. My name is Keith Burgun. I'm a writer for Gamasutra, Dinofarm Games, as well as my own blog, keithburgun.net. I'm also a game designer, having released 100 Rogues and the recently-Kickstarted AURO. I also wrote my own book, called Game Design Theory: A New Philosophy For Understanding Games.

But that's not what I'm here to tell you about! I've been doing a podcast about game design, called the Game Design Theory Podcast. We just recorded our fifth episode. Check it out and tell me if you like it, or if you have any other questions. It's probably best to start with episode 1, or even my Gamasutra article, "What Makes a Game?".

I'm up to episode 4, you guys are getting the hang of it.

I have a game idea i have been prototyping and fleshing out, and using your guys criteria to challenge and improve my thoughts/theories/goals etc. I feel like it is genuinely improved and more importantly, the rules I add to my game have SPECIFIC MEANING, as opposed to "this is good because this game did it and this game was popular". My idea does not seem completely original right now, but I think the possibility for there to be something that is original has greatly increased because of this. Edited by AverageJoeSSU

I'm going through them now. Pretty interesting, much better after it was made clearer you guys are working on a more restrictive definition of what a "game" is, which involves more what I think of as pure game mechanics.

Also, please make Blake talk less.

EDIT: Additionally, ban the phrase "Quote Unquote" Edited by Prinz Eugn
