Hello I have always been a medieval guy and I am kind of away from sci-fi genre,

I also love cartoony graphics, my question is directed to the people who like and play sci-fi games.

How do sci-fi and cartoony graphics stand together? For a 3d iOS game do you think graphics and models should be more realistic or more cartoony?

I know there are much more parameters for this kind of decision but I want to learn the general idea of what sci-fi players like and hate, maybe?

Almost all successful iOS games are cartoony. People prefer cartoons because they are funny and somehow different, meaning allowing a great deal of artistic expression, individualization for the game, so to speak. I would suggest you go with a cartoon look for your sci-fi game.

Can you define what you mean by sci-fi? Do you basically mean "futuristic", as in, lots of metal panels and electronics and machines?

Stylized "cartoon" graphics are popular on mobile, because it's easier to execute them on mobile devices than it is to create hyperrealistic renderers.

There's lots of "cartoon" sci-fi stuff though, and it often fits really well.

e.g. A scanner darkly was a live-action film, but they decided to rotoscope the footage and turn it into a "cartoon" -

"Cartoony" and "comic book" are not synonymous.  Like Prinz said: consider the target audience.

borderlands and XIII, both are kinda sci-fi and use celshading (aka cartoon shader). characters look kinda human, but there are also quite some crazy talking 'things' and the weapons are fun, but not realistic. I'd think that's proofs cartoony is ok. a good cartoon style is way better than a bad try on making it realistic, and I think that's usually the point why mobile games like cartoony.
