[Unreal 3][MMORPG] Source code importance.

Hello,

I would require some information about the importance of possesing the source code in the Unreal 3 engine. As you may know the commerical use of the unreal 3 engine requires the apropriate license. The two main licenses for commercial use are the standard license which is 99$ and 35% Royalties which does not provide the source code. The second license provides the source code and it's estimated price is somewhere between 500,000-1,000 000 USD. We are intending to develop a high quality MMORPG using the unreal 3 engine. While money is not a huge issue, we can afford the engine with the source code but we would not like to use a milion dollars for something that we may or may not need. While we do wish for the usage of the unreal 3 engine (For its high quality) is the source code acually needed for the production of a high quality MMORPG.

Thank you for any information Edited by tim00252

Try using the UDK first and see what you can or can't get done without the source code. No one here can answer that for you, as your project will be unique. But consider that out of the box, Unreal is an FPS engine that supports a low number of players, doing FPS like activities.

You'd be better off using a proper MMORPG framework, such as the Hero Engine.

We insist on using the Unreal 3 engine for our game, as it provides the features we require. One does not need to use their hosting features and so games using the unreal 3 engine are not limited to fps. Still looking for an answer if anyone else has any knowledge on this matter. I think it's been said pretty well above but if you are not sure of it's value then you should not be making that call. But further to that point is: if you want to build a high end MMO and 1 Million even makes the balance sheet then you do not have enough capital to pull it off in todays highly competitive market. Not in a way that will recoup your costs anyway.

Look at it this way: if you are comparing 35% royalties to 1 million up front (as if they are equal) then you are explicitly stating that you INTEND to make < 3 million dollars.

If you intend to make less than 3 million, but you are going to spend > 1 million then I recommend a different avenue of approach.

But if you really have that kind of money to blow feel free to hire me. I'll build it all for you for a scant 1 million dollars!

:P

"While money is not a huge issue "

troll yes ha? I like the idea to hire Aeramor.

$99 vs $1,000,000

I see how they are equal and this is a hard choice. hahaha

$99+35% you make $2,857,142 in sales and with that you will pay 1,000,000 dollars in royalties thus profit = 1.85million Selling more is bad should have bought the other license

vs.

$1,000,000 you make more than $2,857,142 in sales and with that you will pay 1,000,000 dollars = 1.85million but selling more is GRAVY and additional fees are not added
