Global Game Jam 2013

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else here take part in the Game Jam this past weekend?

Here's the music I came up: http://soundcloud.com/nathan-madsen/global-game-jam-2013-cues

Tried writing music with only Logic, my laptop and the caps lock MIDI controller that Logic features. It was interesting and a unique challenge! Really reminded me how important it is to ocassionally put yourself out in new and different situations to challenge your workflow and process.

Please feel free to share any Game Jam tunes, videos, etc below! I'd love to see what you all came up with!

Thanks,

Nate

Hi, great work for 40 hours!

I like your use of Marimba in the couple first cues, it makes things more jungly\tribal. At 0:53, is that a bowed-psaltery instrument? my uncle has one, and it sounds very similar.

My favourite cue has to be the exact first one, it's very friendly.

Anyway, how did you know of this event? I'd like to follow the newsletter or whatever that notifies of upcoming events like these.

Thanks.

Thanks! Regarding that instrument sound - I combined several instrument plugins from Logic together. My laptop HDD isn't large enough to handle all of my virtual instruments (it's mainly a sound design and audio editing set up) so it was a challenge to use only Logic-bundled instruments. Some of them are good and some are..... :P

......there was a contest?

Either way, it's a good suite. Not a fan of the sound of some of the overtones of the bowed-psaltry-like instrument spoken about before, but otherwise, it's very much worth listening to!

Wow...that really does sound like a bowed psaltry!  I tried recording one once...and those are not easy instruments to record.  Wow....that's amazingly good for just using the caps lock keyboard.  I found myself in a similar situation once and downloaded something called midikeys...found it much easier to use than the caps lock keyboard

Well contest isn't the right word. It was more an event. There was no first place or awards - it's just getting together and making games in about 40 hours. I agree some of the sounds or timbres used were not my first choice but I was working with what Logic had bundled with it. Still a useful challenge!

Thanks for the link Bakuda!

My team made an old adventure / Grimlock style game with a bit of point and click and LA Noire Inspecting thrown in. You can play it in the browser here: http://shaneobrien.ie/gamejams/ggj13 or you can grab one of the main builds from my site at http://shaneobrien.ie/?p=362

I was the programmer on this game and even though there are still a few bugs in the game I am really happy with how it turned out =D Will be posting the code once I clean it up a little bit. (horrible terrible code no one should write, but hey, I only had 48 hours - sleep!)

Very awesome! I did a similar event with startup businesses where we had 54 hours and I did an audio presentation, but I just posted that in another thread.

It was very interesting to see mention of a bowed psaltery. My great-grandpa left me one. I have attempted to play it before but all of the strings need replacing, I don't know how to tune it, and I probably need a new bow. Not to mention it's so different from anything I've played before.
