platform game

When I make a platform game, I''m creating a tileset and a map for every level in form av sequences of numbers. The numbers represent a position on screen and a sprite from the tileset. Where should I put the map? It is too much to create a vector to keep all numbers. Many maps will take alot of memory that way. I don''t want to save a file on the disc so people can look at it and edit it.
