Inapropriate ad

I thought it might have been tracking cookies, but the ads still show up even after clearing the cookies and saved browser data.

Google tracks you based on many more factors than just cookies. If you're on the same PC, they still have a pretty good idea of who you are despite clearing your cookies.

I wonder what the problem is? I for one like looking at (half)-naked women.

Not all of us like looking at women other than our "significant other."

 

I want to support GDnet (through its ads), but after I kept repeatedly getting shown "Download Now!" ads (where that's all they said/showed), I got a bit more aggressive in my ad blocking :(

Ah, well, Daz3D just changed the ad after I sent them an email (unless a GameDev staff changed it), so I guess that's resolved. Thanks anyway!

I don't normally bother doing that sort of thing, but I use GameDev.net dozens of times a day and couldn't get rid of the ad. And I didn't want to use an ad blocker either, and reduce revenue. Most GameDev.net ads are very well chosen - it's the only site I've ever actually clicked on ads from.

I'm curious what the reason was, though? I don't see any problem with it. Is it the same reason Cornstalks mentions?

Absolutely. If people want to look at nude women, they can find it easily enough online - there's no lack. It doesn't have to be on a game development website.

Not wanting to view it myself, my solutions are either finding an ad blocker (depriving GameDev of revenue), or asking GameDev or Daz3D to remove the ad.

I'm not depriving anyone of anything they can't just as easily get elsewhere.

I got that ad a couple of times too. My concern was that I was at work so I didn't want anybody to wander by my desk and just see that image without any context that it is an ad on a forum legitimately about programming.

Absolutely. If people want to look at nude women, they can find it easily enough online - there's no lack. It doesn't have to be on a game development website.

I agree.  If you want to see it then you easily find it with a 5 second Google Search.  heck you can even get a video to go with it.  No reason for it when I'm surfing a Game Development website or something about programming.

I agree. I don't really care about unintentionally seeing sexy ladies, but I do care about what's on my screen when I'm at work.
