A* Help

I''ve been reading several articles on the A* algorithm and i STILL haven''t understood how it works. I would appreciate if someone could atleast TRY to describe the theories behind it. Especially what Open and Closed lists are for. I''ve tried solving it with pen and paper methods but i''ve stumbled upon several problems.
