setTexture or setting a transformation matrix for placing your triangles? whats a good grouping scheme in terms of speed? Should I group in terms of setTexture calls or to ensure I have the least amount of transformation calculations?

Usually SetTexture is more expensive. If you think about it in terms of data moving around (the bottleneck in many cases), setting the matrix costs you 64 bytes. Any texture larger than 4x4 will include much more data.
