Microsoft and the Xbox One. Thoughts?

Funny, Xbox One sounds suspiciously like Xbox Won.  A play on words perhaps?  I suspect that the reason they are pushing all the features except for games is because they assume that everyone already knows that the platform can run games.  They are trying to attract a wider market by appealing to people that are not very interested in games, like the parents of all the gamers who need justification for buying this thing. They want non-gamers to take it seriously as well.  Also, by the time fall rolls around, people's TV's are going to be flooded with game ads just in time for Christmas.  They are building up anticipation by holding back for now.  

 

You have more faith in Microsoft marketing than I do. I believe most of the trouble here is how poor of a job they have done explaining the console and the benefits. For example, how many people here know you and a friend can play a single copy of a game at the same time? You can buy one copy of Gears of War 13 and play coop with a friend in another state even though he doesn't have a copy of the game. That's a feature I will be using a lot.

I would lean towards Microsoft thinking existing Xbox 360 goodwill would carry them over while they tried to get mom and dad in the living room. I think it's beyond stupid that the launch, which was watched 90% by people who care more about games than anything else, had such a huge emphasis on not-games. And then, maybe worse, E3's message was so poorly managed that Sony came out looking significantly better.

 

I think they would've been better placating gamers while they're all watching and then do the market broadening stuff later, since those people don't give half a crap about reveals anyway.

I think a great compromise would be to have everything the way they have it now, except if you want to play offline more than 24 hours, you need the original media in the console.

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future. 

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One. 

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:
 
  • An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
     
  • Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
     

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.
 

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.
 

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.
 

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

 

I think the two big things they changed are the way it should have been from the start. Essentially what they're saying is that the disc authenticates the game. I can't tell if I missed anything else.

I think it at least makes it less of an obvious choice. I honestly think Xbox showed better games at E3, but they weren't even allowed to talk about that advantage because they were too busy covering up for the online requirements/used game stuff. At least now they'll be able to talk about they're lineup/features without being drowned out.

You bet your wallet it does! I know a ton of Xbox 360 fans who were so disappointed in the One that they were completely staying away from it and going to the PS4 (myself included), simply because of the need-to-login once a day crap. But now that's removed, so I guarantee you my friends will definitely be purchasing the One, despite the higher price tag.

However, I do plan on getting the PS4 first, because there are a lot of games that excited me more for the PS4 than Xbox One. Knack, for example, looks pretty dang awesome!

Oh, that's right its not. We are just maintaining the status quo. I just lost a lot of enthusiasm for the Xbox one. Can't have it both ways I guess.

but yeah... my bet; 6 months into the console release people will moan about having to have the disk in the drive to play their games (much like they currently do) - on this day I plan to point and laugh.

Oh, that's right its not. We are just maintaining the status quo. I just lost a lot of enthusiasm for the Xbox one. Can't have it both ways I guess.


I suspect that by removing these restrictions, it'll be easier to eventually ease people back into them. these changes were simply too abrudt, and too high of a price for getting a new console imo. (most particularly with the daily online check.)

I missed this the first time I read through it. I thought all they did was make disks authenticate. This makes me sad. That was one of the coolest features of the console. It was actually such a good feature that it would have hurt anybody who didn't also adopt it. It's a shame all the negative press drowned that part out :(

I like how they took away the proposed new features while giving back the old features. I wonder if they did that out of spite or they really didn't know how to have the two coexist properly.

I don't know if it'd be possible for the two to co-exist. if u allow no disks, it means u at least need internet to do checks everyday to ensure their's no duplicate copys floating on people's game librarys.

At the end of the day, too many people were complaining about it being practically an always on product, and we just do not have the infrastructure to support it yet imo. Edited by slicer4ever

They probably could have done but it likely would have meant a change from 'online every 24h' to 'always online if you want to play a game without the disk' and can you imagine the reaction to that? *shudders*

No, the masses have spoken (apparently) so it's 7 years of slightly faster slightly prettier hardware for us...

Because Gizmodo are *known* to be an unbiased, very-well respected news source...

I love that they make it sound like the One is going to suck by listing all of the new features that everybody hated, that Microsoft have since fixed and that's been the standard since gaming has existed (sharing games, offline usability, etc.,).

"Oh no, I have to use a disc!". A real shame, that. 

"Oh no, I can sell my games back to Gamestop! What a terrible travesty as that's going to wreck the industry!" said no one ever, who enjoyed getting at least something for a used game they didn't play anymore.

"Oh no! I have to share games by sharing the disc, instead of the terrible limit of one share per friend per account! What sort of hell is this?!" A pretty good peak into heaven, me thinks. 

You all can say what you want about the Xbox One's reversal being a horrible move, but seriously, it's a HUUUGE step in the RIGHT direction. They fixed a TON of problems by reversing their stupid policies. I cannot fathom how anyone on this forum can say "DRM is good, it's good to only have the ability to share the game with friend FOREVER, and it's good to have an almost always-online console...". Yeah, good, that's why everyone cried out in agony over this. But now that Microsoft's fixed it, people like that Gizmodo author have to go and complain about a console with updated everything that suddenly works just like the previous generations, in that you can play offline and share games? SERIOUSLY!? What the heck kind of sense does that make?

And how come nobody complained that the PS4 was offline-ready and able to share game discs, but now that MS have reversed their stance it's a bad idea and made the console "worse"?

Gotta love double-standards...

1) People have complained THIS GENERATION that having to have a disk in the machine to play in installed game is dumb.
2) You could still sell your games except the plan was instead of Gamestop pushing used copies over new (so more $$$ for them) the people who made the thing would get a kick back instead. This in turn could have been reinvested and better games come out...
3) It was never 'one share per friend per account', yes you can only share the game with one friend at a time (much like now with disks) but if you want to share the game with a friend who lives on the other side of the country you have to send 'em the disk; with the system was it was going to be they could have downloaded a copy and played locally.

Even living in the UK if I wanted to share a game with a friend it would have taken a day or more to get to him assuming I sent it on a week day and would have cost me money. With the proposed system I could have digitally lent it to him whenever and he could have downloaded and started playing right away.

You all can say what you want about the Xbox One's reversal being a horrible move, but seriously, it's a HUUUGE step in the RIGHT direction.


It's not a step at all, that's the point.. it's a continuation of the status quo.

Because there was no discussion over this issue on the PS4 which was a loud. A few of my friends expressed a desire to get the Xbox over the PS4 because of things like no disk in the machine while playing so for them it's a step backwards.

The PS4 was what it was, a faster PS3-style console.. MS tried something new, people moaned, so now we have a faster XBox360.

If that's what people want then that's what people apparently want.. but they HAVE stripped out features and some selling points which does, in a real way, make the Xbox worse than if it had had those features.

So obviously, I don't understand how all of this works exactly. If you have a game from disc, then you shouldn't be able to lend digitally. If you've downloaded a game from the cloud, then you should be able to. So if you digitally lend the game to your friend, then you should be effectively locked out from the game, until your friend gives it back. Why can't this work without (the check-in once a day) DRM?

MS tried something new, but completely failed to understand their current audience/ early adopters, and therefore communicate any of the advantages of their way vs their competition. Instead, we got a goddamn TV guide/Skype commercial, which set the tone of "Microsoft doesn't care about gamers" which they only exacerbated at E3 by again failing to communicate the upsides of their distribution model.

 

Their PR sucked, and then proceeded to completely blow it, which is no fault but their own.
