Call me performance paranoid but do signed variables like (int) carry with them more overhead than unsigned variables like (unsigned int) at run-time, compile-time or both. Cheers, any replies.

nope.

Processors support signed and unsigned instructions at the same time.

in fact, the addition and subtraction algorithms for both signed and unsigned integers is the same.

In fact only a single signal from the CPU controler is different (off instead of on)(at least in the 8086).
