I decided to get a idea what C/C++ engines are around nowadays. So after a few hours I have come down to power render4 crystal space panard vision auren jet jtgame any comments on these? I am looking for the most easiest and object oriented one to use. Ofcourse this is a power render forum but I am looking for some honest comparisons.

These are just my impressions - take them as you will

Auran Jet - will likely be a good engine, but it''s fairly complicated to figure out quickly and there''s not much in the way of documentation on it yet. I''m watching this one as one to check out down the road.

Panard Vision - haven''t used

Crystal Space - I''d love to try this one out, but every single version I try will not compile for me. And repeated posts to the mailing lists haven''t solved the problem. It''s gotta be something I''m doing wrong, because lots of other people can get it, but I''m stuck.

Never heard of jtgame.

Power Render - the best choice from your list IMO, but I wish the terrains you can make were bigger. Other than that, plus needing a few more examples, it''s a good engine.

One engine that''s not on your list and is worth considering is the Torque engine. It''s only $100 and is the engine that Tribes 2 was built with. It''s pretty mission-oriented, but full source code to the engine is included with that $100 so you can change that. It has good terrain support and an active forum of people helping each other with problems (similar to this one). You can check it out at www.garagegames.com.

There''s also Genesis, which is being re-written as Destiny3D. It should be a good one when it comes out. Genesis was ok, but was restricted to indoors-fps type levels pretty much in my experience. The updated version will have lots of terrain support and supposedly will be much easier to work with. Check it out at www.destiny3d.com, but to see much of the site, you gotta pay a fee

Personally, I''m down to Torque and Power Render as the two engines that I''m seriously working with, but I haven''t gotten too far with either one yet - just haven''t had the time.

Hope that helps!
thanks for the reply..

I did some work with genesis3d.. and wrote a little game with the PHOTONEFFECT 3d engine. I am waiting to see what destiny 3d will be like.

I am going to spend about 30mins each with the few engines I am playing with and see what will do the job best. Ill write back later after I look at them some more

hi, i noticed ur discussion. i was lurking in one of the other rooms and noticed someone mention an "engine" called quest3d http://www.quest3d.com so i went to the site and was fairly impressd with what i saw.

im a newbie at game coding but i know atht my first project will be fairly serious and i expect it to take at least 18 months.. with that said i was originally reallllllly planning on using Power Render 4 after looking at all the options (i want full DirectX compatibility)

anyways.. u may want to check out this "quest3d" although i dont see anywhere on the site any mention of compatibility with vertex or pixel shaders..

ok ill look at that.

I noticed some engines teach you more about manually creating the vertexes and rotations and all.. I am looking for something that can just load models and animations..

rev3d engine is great. but its in VB

I am also looking at java 3d engines..

so much to do!

Don''t let the 18 months of support stop you from using PR. All license terms are negotiable. Also I''ve had people using PR for 4-5 years and I still give them support, as long as they aren''t flooding me with emails every day I don''t mind

Chris,

Thanx a lot. that means a lot to me. I''m really gunning for making a MMORPG using ur engine. The current limits to the maximum terrain size would force me to somehow encaposulate or seperate game areas to fit within the maximum terrain sizxe.. am I right?

From what I can tell (as a newbie) ur engine is what I am looking for. I am happy you giver such detailed support. I may be moving to Tronto during the summer, so it means a lot to me that you are such a helpful guy

By the way, are you planning at all to include Maya export capabilities in your engine (not that I care, Max is just fine). Also, is there any possibility of a gmax game pack being released for Power Render at all. (again, not really a big issue)

Again, thanks a lot

if you are a newbie you should first create a less ambitious project.

I am still making games with just balls bouncing around.

I would guess 95% of games started never get completed

yeah.. ur right.. by newbie i meant i havent coded my own game project (sellable anyways) although i have been project manager on several applications.

of course thats why i gave myself an 18 month schedule.. anyways.. thanx for the advice..

from the days f Starfliht ive been here and there workin with amatuer coders working on their own projects (starflight circa 1984 by the way.. ahhh what a game) so ive seen and been involved with a whole lottttt of those dream projects that never quite get finished..

anyways.. i figured that im nearing that special age so i miht as well start and end this one.. no matter how long it may take.. (hence the 18 month schedule)

regardless though.. i still need to plan or else it definitely wont be completed.. plannin is most essential i assume to gettin projects completed..

and.. well.. i still dont know yet how im going to handle the world terrain based on power renders limitations.. uess i can use some sort of "island" design that would allow smaller areas?

anyways.. thanx
