A strategy game where you are a space emperor (not just a simulation of an empire, but also an emperor as a person). What kind of events could there be?

Some thoughts

A supernova threatens a sector of your population

A wormhole is discovered opening up new sector of space

Intelligent life is discovered on a planet you have already colonised

Discovery of ancient ruins proves that empire may have originated from one planet - the legendary "Dirt"

A plague being spread through intersystem travel

The emperor's birthday

Empire foundation day

Victory over the vile Escargot empire day

The revealing of the Emperor's new portrait

The Grand derby Solar sailing race day

Mad Mandric's day -- a variation on Guy Fawke's day but utilising thermite fireworks in space

The annual orphans picnic -- your charitable donation to the empire raising awareness of the plight of orphans despite you being the predominate reason for most orphans being orphans

The emperor's wedding

The emperor's attendance at a neighbouring wedding

Signing congratulatory texts for humans who have aged to 200

Changing palaces from the winter palace on one system to the summer palace on another

The Grand Tour -- visiting planets in your empire

Delivering speeches

Wearing ceremonial regalia that has important significance but leaves you looking like a twit

Promoting and rewarding (knighthoods, medals etc)

Rebellion

Usurpation attempts

public disapproval

premature balding

diplomatic incidents

scandal

monument building

hope this helps

This would be an interesting idea. However, it would require some serious planning to prevent it from becoming boring.

Some ideas could be negoiations with other space traveling people

The defense of colonies

Budget planning

Events...

The AI threat - an intelligent AI has begun spreading through the empire.

  • Ships go rogue
  • Production and research drops unexpectedly
  • Constructions orders changed without order
  • Eventually if left unchecked it will convert a colony in a mechanized world and emerge as a new hostile race.

The Quest - The emperor is dying and needs to track down an ancient relic.

  • Charlatans will offer fake leads
  • Fragments and maps will generate new research topics
  • Races and individuals will offer fragments for favorites

What kind of strategy game are we talking about? Build troops and conquer (star craft) of more of a manage resources game (sim city)?

I like the ideas from Stormynature.

Some addition to that could be

- preperations for a deep space colony expedition

- An alliance gone bad

- a love story

Gruntmutter.com - what are you muttering about?

Anything I could think of would be heavily inspired by Master of Orion, so just look at this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/197873-master-of-orion-ii-battle-at-antares/faqs/14668, and Ctrl+F to "random events list" for some inspiration. I particularly liked the space dragon who would show up and threaten to attack you unless you paid it (and would then let you direct it to another player's system if you could cough up the dough).
