I think at least most of you have already played Sonic the Hedgehog games for the Sega Genesis and may remember the drum sounds used in the games (I mean, there is an specific drum sounds set in Sonic 1 and 2, and other drum samples set for Sonic 3 & Knuckles), and I''d like to know if there''s someone here who is experienced with drum machines and may identify for me the ones that generated those drum sounds. And if possible, to say if these machine''s samples are around the Net and where I may possibly find them. It''s very important for me. I''d appreciate every help. Enough for now! Can''t remember those particular drum sounds. Anyway, as far as I remember, Genesis audio data is stored in a format called .GYM. Zophars Domain has a load of data about console formats, as well as whole soundtracks to download in native format.

If that doesn''t help, sample it yourself - either from the original console or ( probably easier ) an emulator. Don''t the Sonic games have a ''sound test'' menu item. Should be fairly trivial.

Just remember, sampling sources for use in distributed music is illegal ( unless you get away with it. )
yeah, your best bet is to sample the sounds yourself, thats exactly what I did with the Streets of Rage 2 Instruments, I downloaded the emulated music then found a .gym player that would enable you to shut off channels. then I recorded the instruments seperatly, chopped them up and edited them. I actually made a soundfont out of them and sequenced a few midis and the resemlance between the soundfont and the real thing turned out pretty close. If you want to check it out you can download the soundfont here =>

Streets of Rage 2.sf2

and you can get a few of the midi's I sequenced for it here

Streets of Rage 2 - Bar Stage Theme.mid

Yes, I''ve sampled the drum sounds already (through Genecyst). I just was not satisfied with the quality of the samples. I''d like to have 16bit 44khz versions of them, that''s why I wrote asking for the name of the drum machuine used.

Thanks anyway for all the help offered and forgive my bad english.

well, for most games on the genisis, they used FM synths and they actually made all their own instruments, so it''s not likely you will find the same ones. Just try to look for something thats similar I guess cause you''re not going to find those samples at a higher quality. I made that soundfont for the love of the oldschool instruments, SoR2 had the best sounding instruments on the genisis (IMO) so it was a tribute.
