Adaptive sun glare

I need help making my sun glare work properly. Currently I have a billboard to represent my sun glare. I scale it with respect to distance from the sun and occlusion. The occlusion is done by testing a series of points to see if any object is blocking it on screen. Each point lost to occlusion reduces the size of the glare. This works fine for the most part, but when for instance: coming around a planet, the edge of the sun is seen and the glare shows up over the planet. Here is an image:

As you can see, it doesn't look right.... Is there a better way to do the glare?
