What are each of them used for exactly? Right now I know that the focus window gets the input messages, but what's up with the device window?

device window is the window where the backbuffer/render target is presented (shown). It is needed at the device creation time, to pass the window handle, BUT, you can change the window on which the buffer is shown by passing a different window handle at device.Present() function. if you pass null to that parameter, the implicit handle you passed at device creation is used.

And let me add up to this (hold your jaw), that you can use a window handle of another process :). No kidding, just pass the handle to present in your app. you can get handles of windows out in the wild by many methos, such as get window by name/id and so. Of course, problem is to actualy know the stranger id or name, but the name usualy matches title of window (usualy).
