Does anyone know of a C "equivalent" to fully-featured, robust C++ libraries like Newton, Bullet, ... ?

You didn't specify 2d or 3d physics, so I'll recommend box2d for 2d physics. For 3d physics, I don't know of any specific library in C, but both Newton and Bullet should have C wrappers. I have used Bullet before and would recommend it.

ODE is exposed through a C interface.
