Does anyone know of C "equivalent" libraries to things like assimp, or the COLLADA/FBX SDKs?

What's wrong with simply using assimp? This isn't your first thread asking about C alternatives to popular C++ libraries. If you are having problems finding libraries for C, then why not use C++? Your C code will compile just as well in a C++ compiler, and what modern C compiler isn't also a C++ compiler?

I agree with Chris_F, Assimp is a great tool, and if any downsides, it can't load FBX files for now, but we can live without them.

http://assimp.sourceforge.net/main_features.html on the 3rd line : Core interface / API is provided for both C++ and C

So basiclly you can use assimp in C code.

I personally prefer using FBX SDK, because of reasons.... FBX SDK is well documented with small but helpful community. (And yes, you can import different from FBX file formats). Actually if you can afford it, you must concider writing a plugin for 3ds Max/Maya/wever... it is not that hard and it will give you full control over the scene!
