As the title says, I am curious what methods are used to paint textures. Specifically in a level editor. I have been working on my own engine for a long while now and have been working on an editor that consumes my engine. I believe this to be important functionality but am not sure how to start. I can imagine ways about it, multiple layers of textures with alpha channels, directly write to the surface depending on where the mouse clicked and then draw the layers from the bottom up. This is pure speculation. I am not much of a graphics programmer and honestly am not sure where to even look.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
