List of every rendering technique?

Is there a list out there, such as bump mapping etc...

 

Can i ask what exactly creates the graphics on a surface/entitiy, is it your application of C/C++ or is it the application of say Direct3D/Opengl functions. By that I mean, say you have a cube and want it bump mapped or to have some lightning/shader effect on it, shadow volume etc, is there a DirectX/3d function already written to do this, in other words do would call this Direct3D fucntion and apply it to your surface?

 

For example if you wanted to display a message box you would first have to include windows.h and then call,

MessageBox(NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL);

Is it a similar principle for Direct3D or am I way off the mark here.
