Ive been watching 3D Printing Technology for about 20 years (industrial modeling using a styrene bath with a UV lazer on a XY moving head...)

I figure sometime in the future you'll be able to go down to your local Walmart or Target (or whatever) and use their machine(s) taking a code ( for a one use production) you got in a box of cereal or from a game company, etc... To make some item of interest.

Of course this technology is just getting started. I saw a new one that glues ordinary printing paper sheets with very good inkjet coloring - 'Mcor' (some irish company). The buildings in particular would be directly applicable, the spindly figures, not too much unless they were done fairly large.

The 3D printers need to get ALOT faster though (minutes instead of hours). But clever people are working on that.

Now how can they somehow be integrated into/with computer games ??? (actual part of the game, now with real tactile effect) Maybe puzzle pieces you incrementally get with clues as to what to do in the game to get more of forward.

There will of course still be the collectables aspect, and now with possible customizations for what is produced.

WHo knows where this new stuff will go??
