What Tispe says is correct: "normally" it can't.  There are abnormal cases where it can get lost even in a windowed mode: the player runs a fullscreen game at the same time as your windowed game is running, some power management event occurs, a hardware failure occurs, etc.

Hi,

My DirectX app does not currently support full screen mode.

In windowed mode, how would I cause my DirectX app to lose its device

so that I can test my lost device handling source code to see if it works?

Thanks!

I think pressing control-alt-del and then cancelling it will make it lose the device, even in windowed mode.

I had a weak PSU. So whenever my GPU would draw too much power it would restart itself causing a lost device. ;)

Write a program that initializes D3D in fullscreen mode, runs for a second or two and then exits.  That should also force a lost device.
