Aspiring Music Composer

Hey,

I'm new to Gamedev and Music&Sound category.

I've recently purchased a Casio keyboard which I hope I'll stick to. I'm planning on studying notes and playing the piano, what I'm also excited about is soundtracks. So here is my attempt to learn how to create and compose music for video-games.

 

I'm still new and unexperienced but I had to make -SOMETHING- to ease on my excitement.

Good experimentation with timbres (instrument sounds) and ambience. The next thing you should do is try to get each of your parts in time with each other so they fit together in the same underlying sense of pulse.

 

Welcome! If you're *just* starting out with music in general, well there's a lot to learn but it's a fun journey so enjoy yourself!

I started out writing music for games on a casio MK500. I spent hours studying how to make my music sound right. One of the things that I learned that really helped me was rhythm. Keep a driving pulse (or a gentle smooth one depending on the song you are making). It helps keep the song grounded. Before you do that though, have an idea of what you want the piece to be (rock, orchestral soundtrack, jazz). This will help you get a start. It may turn into something completely different by the end, but that's all part of writing music.

 

Welcome to the world of music composition. As stated by JackMusic, have fun. Music is an extension of yourself. If you are feeling sad or depressed when writing music, the sound will reflect it. Likewise if you are having the best day of your life.

Welcome fellow musician! Just a few tips, studying classical music can work miracles for learning piano -- Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, etc, and listening to soundtracks used in movies, television shows and video games is great for composing some pieces of your own (so long as you don't actually steal any of those soundtracks :P). Synthesia is a good program when used with a MIDI keyboard to learn to play, you can find all sorts of Synthesia compositions on youtube. Good luck, and happy piano-ing :)
