Anyone knows a good free/open-source game engine for 3D side-scrolling game? Something similar to Little Big Planet.

Pretty much any of the major 3D engines could handle it. None of them are open source.

Unity is the most free of the licenses; it has a license that it may be used commercially for no cost as long as your revenue is below $100,000, then it requires a $1500 per developer license once you cross the threshold.

Unreal (UDK) has a license that it may be used free under limited non-commercial use. If you choose to sell your game it requires a $99 license with 25% royalties starting at $50,000 in revenue.

C4 is decidedly not free for development, costing $750 if your revenue is below $100,000. But the engine could be used to create a LBP-style game.

Other engines may or may not be able to handle it.

I did a quick demo of a 3D-rendered 2D side-scrolling infinite world using the Urho3D engine. You can find the demo here. I'm a big fan of Urho3D, and I'm using it for my current project. I recommend you at least take a look at it. It's open source, and growing to be quite powerful, with support for a lot of different platforms.
