well designed sites?

Are you sure this is a Business question?  What constitutes good design in your opinion (what is it you are looking for with this thread)?

marketing actually.

i was hard pressed to select a category to post in.  there doesn't seem to be a category for marketing questions.

a google searrch usually yields top ten lists made by web designers. the typical stuff. either the "move marquee" web page design style or the "frontpage of a newpaper" style.  I was wondering what the game dev community's "top ten best game sites" might be.

i'm getting ready to setup a new website and was interested in current design trends for game sites.

of course another approach might be to get a list of the current top ten selling pc titles and check out their sites.

If you want to approach it from a marketing standpoint, then go to any major gaming site and click on the game ads that show up most often. Chances are, if they are pouring a lot of money into paid advertising, they've also poured a lot of money and effort into highly optimizing their website for marketing conversions. From a designer's perspective these won't always be your favorite, but what looks good and what converts aren't always the same thing.

an excellent point.

its what sells that matters.

in that respect, a site should build buzz and hype and the urge to click on that buy now button. but a poorly designed site will neglect or hinder these things.

I like the website for TearAway, for the PSVita: http://tearaway.mediamolecule.com/

I think it communicates well what it is about, it isn't verbose and shows care regarding the presentation (the papercraft theme).

the one page design is nice.

website theme design that matches the game is a must.

that's why i'm setting up a new website.  i can't even do a background graphic on my current site.

my site for CAVEMAN v1.x   was both themed and one page design.

I have found another one with a similar orientation. The graphics are polished as well:

I believe these predominantly vertical designs were made to address both desktop and mobile browsing.

an excellent example of designing the webpage for the target platform.
