Assimp Bones

When importing scenes - each mesh has a set of bones with vertex IDs relevant to the vertices in that mesh... but anytime there are multiple materials assimp splits up the scene so there is one mesh per material... so my question is this...

 

what if a vertex in one mesh is influenced by a bone in a different mesh...?

 

For example what if a character has a hat on - that hat has a different material than the character mesh for some reason.. then assimp is going to split the model in to two meshes - one for the head/body and one for the hat.. then on import the body/head mesh will have bones that are influenced by vertices in the head/body model and thats fine

 

but what about the hat mesh? If the vertices in the hat were influenced by bones in the head/body mesh what happens then? is it going to recreate those same bones for the hat mesh?
