It's free for free games.

For commercial games it's like CryEngine/Unreal, where you talk to them in private and negotiate a price and/or royalties.

It was originally designed for the creation of Half-Life 2 (and Team Fortress 2, and Counter-Strike....), so it's probably most optimally suited to 3D shooters, not 2D games.

Im sure its not free.

Not sure of prices or royalties, They have sold it, I believe Titan, coming out next year is using it, Dark Messiah from a while back used it.

Like unity in what way? you can use the mod tools (Counter-strike, Half-life, etc) to get an idea of how things are built with it, I dont believe they have an open buying program for it, with a website and prices.

The tags applied to this post suggest hand held devices, I doubt it has any support for things like that right now. Its largely a 3D engine used internally at Valve.

No! I don't care how many bells and whistles your engine has, if the documentation sucks it doesn't matter. UDK, Torque3D, and Source have virtually the same problem -- Poor to Abysmal documentation.

There's plenty of 2D engines out there such as libgdx, Orx, corona, and Gideros.

I invite anyone to tell me why they feel the documentation of any of the aforementioned engines is adequate. Class listing doesn't equal adequacy.
