Developing for various aspect ratios at the same time

I'm trying to develop a game for mobile, and since I want to work smarter instead of harder, i'm trying to deal with the various aspect resolutions of the different devices.

I have an idea for this, but i'm in need of confirmation to see if i'm in the right path: I was thinking in doing the background graphics bigger than the common aspect ratios (bigger than 16:10 was my idea), and then adjust it according to the devices aspect ratio.


The thing I want to know is if this is possible. Can you check in real time the resolution of a device? I'm developing in Actionscript 3 and I've yet to find out if it's possible (haven't find anything yet).
