How to put a texture map on a gluSphere

How can I put a texture map onto a gluSphere (a compiled display list)??? I need it for cell shading - 1d texture with texture coordinates from 0.0 to 1.0 .

Make a sphere using a gluQuadric object, that way you can have OGL calculate the normals, tesselation amount, texture coordinates, and a helluva lot of other cool stuff!
