Thanks, we definitely wanted something different than a typical match-3, which is why we went with a more unusual gameboard.

 

Engine-wise we used an old version of Unity to make potential porting easier, but we wrote our own renderer to optimize the 2D graphics, do proper tweening, animations, etc. From what I gather the newer versions of Unity are starting to use the 3D base for 2D rendering, but we're still using our own custom code for that.
