      Download the Game Design and Indie Game Marketing Freebook   07/19/17

      GameDev.net and CRC Press have teamed up to bring a free ebook of content curated from top titles published by CRC Press. The freebook, Practices of Game Design & Indie Game Marketing, includes chapters from The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, and An Architectural Approach to Level Design. The GameDev.net FreeBook is relevant to game designers, developers, and those interested in learning more about the challenges in game development. We know game development can be a tough discipline and business, so we picked several chapters from CRC Press titles that we thought would be of interest to you, the GameDev.net audience, in your journey to design, develop, and market your next game. The free ebook is available through CRC Press by clicking here. The Curated Books The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition, by Jesse Schell Presents 100+ sets of questions, or different lenses, for viewing a game’s design, encompassing diverse fields such as psychology, architecture, music, film, software engineering, theme park design, mathematics, anthropology, and more. Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. Learn more and download the ebook by clicking here. Did you know? GameDev.net and CRC Press also recently teamed up to bring GDNet+ Members up to a 20% discount on all CRC Press books. MSVS's preprocessor vs gcc's preprocessor

69 posts in this topic

So I am trying to learn about creating c++ programs using the openl libraries. I have found I cannot use the GlTools.h header file in my program. Everything words fine, I throw that in there and everything goes crazy. This is a preprocessor error. What is different between how msvs's preprocessor is handling this file and gcc's preprocessor?

I am using windows 7 for my OS, I believe it to be a processor error because errors show up only after I included the header file GLTools.h. I first thought it was a compile error because I was getting compile errors; however, after talking to my instructor today he told me it was a preprocessor error. Here is the code:

// Triangle.cpp
// Our first OpenGL program that will just draw a triangle on the screen.

#include <GL/gl.h>
#include <GL/glu.h>
#include <GL/glut.h> // Windows FreeGlut equivalent

#include <GLTools.h> // as soon as I put this line in it crashes

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// Window has changed size, or has just been created. In either case, we need
// to use the window dimensions to set the viewport and the projection matrix.
void ChangeSize(int w, int h)
{
    glViewport(0, 0, w, h);
}

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// Called to draw scene
void RenderScene(void)
{
    // Clear the window with current blue color
    glClearColor(0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f );
    glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT | GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT);

    // Perform the buffer swap to display back buffer
    glutSwapBuffers();
}

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// Main entry point for GLUT based programs
int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
    glutInit(&argc, argv);
    glutInitDisplayMode(GLUT_DOUBLE | GLUT_RGBA | GLUT_DEPTH);
    glutInitWindowSize(800, 600);
    glutCreateWindow("Triangle");
    glutReshapeFunc(ChangeSize);
    glutDisplayFunc(RenderScene);

    glutMainLoop();

    return 0;
}

- You threw in a completely unrelated question, that is, the difference between the preprocessors in GCC and Visual C++.

I think I was asking something else.

You didn't tell what compiler you are using, nor whether you have GLUT/FreeGLUT installed, nor the error message(s) you get.

I will not try any further to help.

I am using the compiler gcc, sorry I thought that was obvious.

I'm getting a bunch of GLAPI errors, I can't get them all but here is the gist of it.

I noticed that I am using glew.h in GLTools.h and not in my main program. I don't know if I am giving gcc the path to that header file. But I must be because the preprocessor is finding it.

The gl.h file depends on other files, for example on Windows you need to include windows.h before gl.h. On the other hand, glut.h handles that already. If you include glut.h, then don't include gl.h or glu.h, because it's doing that already as well as preparing the correct symbols for gl.h and glu.h to work.

I realize that files depend on each other and what is happening is that a dependency isn't being defined, I just have know idea what to do about it.

Also, find the errors at the top (beginning) of the error output, I suspect there may be a message about file not found. The GCC preprocessor may not like the bell character used like that.

My entire command line fills up and I can not see that.

Can you try adding -DGLAPIENTRY to you GCC command line?

when I tried that I got errors for 10 mins and I just killed it

I tried to see as quick as I could what it said right after I try compiling and it says a .h is missing.

A .h is missing... Well... That's why I asked you back in reply #5 whether you have GLUT/FreeGLUT installed.

This snippet:

#include <GL/gl.h>
#include <GL/glu.h>
#include <GL/glut.h> // Windows FreeGlut equivalent

Why don't you right-click each #included file and see whether your IDE can find it? Just to be sure...

Those header files are not giving me problems on their own.

gl.h not found

glu.h not found

glut.h not found

but I am using the command line and using -I to find them.

I tried to find the paths to all the header files I was referencing and I could not find my gl.h or glu.h files anywhere on my computer.

#include <GL/glut.h>

Make sure your -I switch points to the folder containg the GL folder.  For example, if the glut.h file is in F:\school\csci\opengl\SB5\Src\GLTools\include\gl\glut.h then the command-line argument needs to be -IF:\school\csci\opengl\SB5\Src\GLTools\include .. just in case it was not clear.  It really is important to see exactly what the error message is.

Also, I'm not sure what environment you run in, but it's usually possible to capture all diagnostic output into a text file for later analysis.  In the environment in which I work, adding '>build.log 2>&1' works, but if you're using an IDE surely there is some equivalent.

I am using the command lines, I only use the IDE to look at unformatted text. I use code blocks and gcc compiler for my environment.  I would like to build a text file for my errors I just don't know how to.
