Indie Game (PC) Realm

Hellu!

My name is Robin Norrman and I would like to show you a game that I have been working on.

Realm is a fun multiplayer action game that you can play with your friends for free! With a customizable server that anyone can host, the possibilities are endless.
There are no classes in this game. As the player learns abilities and chooses items, the player creates his own class.
Since the player decides his/her own class each match, the gameplay is dynamic.
Because of dynamic classes, there is no "best build", as players must counter each other in order to win.

Or visit the youtube channel for the game:

The game is completely free and available at my website.
Website: http://realm-diary.com/

What I want with the game right now is just to be noticed. A publisher may want me to finish the game or I could add microtransactions for cool stuff (that will not make you better ingame).

Alot of people has helped me with testing and some have helped me create 2D and 3D art but all of the programming is made by me.

What I am using in the project:
C++
Ogre3D (Rendering)
Bullet (Physics)
enet (Multiplayer)
OpenAL (Sound)
FLTK (GUI for Host Game)
Inno Setup (Installation)
Qt (For GUI of the launcher)
LiteUnzip (For patching system of the launcher)

Edit: Changed the youtube channel link to a better one

Even though its not an MMO - you might want to tweak the name.

I believe The Realm is still active - and while you can't copyright a title, there's a good chance they've trademarked the name (too lazy to check myself).

Other than that it looks great (if it didn't look great the name would be the least of your worries ;) )

if there's a title with prior use for "the realm", and you title is "realm", you'll want to / need to rename before release.

Thank you for your posts!

Regarding the trademarking, I can find "The Realm" on kickstarter, but apparently it failed, and I can not find the actual game or any gameplay footage of it.

Does this mean that it is not a started project yet?

Keep in mind that my game has been frozen and unfrozen for several years, which might lead to an exception regarding trademark.

But of course, if there are any troubles, I will change the name of the game, but that would happen if I see that people like the game, since it costs around $300 for a trademark.

The Realm was the original MMO (side by side with Meridian 59). It's kept going all these years (I think it took a short hiatus at one point), but a dedicated fan base can keep something like that alive for a long time.

Google "The Realm" and it should be right at the top of the list.

Oh I see, but is that not called "The Realm Online"?

My game is only named "Realm", is this not sort of the same thing Notch came across when creating Scrolls, that no one can just copyright a simple word?

There is also another game on kickstarter that is called "The Realm", but my project was started before that one.

Thank you for noticing!

Right now, the game is in early alpha stage, though all the programming is done already.

All art, sound and possibly the name would need to be changed before it would become retail.

You can't copyright a title.

You can trademark words or a phrase.

I don't know if The Realm is trademarked or not - their homepage didn't list it at the bottom, but that's not definitive.

I have updated the game a bit, and here is my newest video, showing some examples of custom servers.

Looks interesting and promising! :D

>> since it costs around $300 for a trademark

it only costs to register a trademark, which gives additional proof of "prior use", which is what it all seems to be about. in court, with two games with such similar names, the one with prior use would win, and the other would have to cease and desist use of the similar name.

a lot has to do with the similarity of the products or services, and the possibility of confusion between the two products in the consumer's eye.

two games called "the realm", and "realm", or "the realm online" and "realm" would definitely lead to consumer confusion in the eyes of the courts. Perhaps not to a game savvy consumer, but the courts are hardy game savvy.
