rotation around the world

I''m creating a game at the moment, and i''m having some difficulties changing the ''camera'' angles. I need a way to zoom in and out, rotate up, down, and to the sides. I''ve gotten bits of the code to work, but its too inefficient. Currently i am rotating the world, but that''s WAY too slow, is there a better way?

Oh yeah, My rotations are meant to be semi-circular, a central axis about which the camera rotates around. (I''ve also got to be able to move left and right, eventually)
