Hey, I''m trying to develop good cloud cover for my planets. This is what I have so far(www.laeuchli.com/jesse/). What I''ve been doing is mapping a transperant cloud texture to a sphere, and drawing the planet inside the sphere. This hasn''t been working to great :-(. Anyone have any better ideas? There was a post about this a while back on Flipcode. The technique used was this: a ring (tristrip) was made around the planet, that would always face the camera (billboard). It was textured with a cloud texture that faded out. That should take the sharp edges off your cloudsphere and make it look good.
sounds good, but have you got anymore details? Do you know which section of flipcode this was posted on?
I found the thread: http://www.flipcode.com/cgi-bin/msg.cgi?showThread=00002606&forum=3dtheory&id=-1
