Hello,

I'm trying to make a game based news site, maybe instead of seeing "world news" we should see the world as a real game.

News sites like CNN or Fox news are using articles and news items.

Although they use phrases like "game" and "player", it's not a real game.

The real challenge is to make a game that will show world news as a game events.

Why a news site should be a real game ?

The media determines how we "see" the world or how we perceive reality.

When were looking at news it seems that the world reality is more like a game reality.

The best way to tell the world story is to use a game, not a newspaper or a news site.

The medium is the message

Marshall McLuhan

The aim is not to make a game based on a single news event like the war in Syria or Crimea.

News-items should be part of the game, working like moves in a strategy game.

When we play a game, the reality inside the game is not real.

Making a game based news site means that we are using the real world reality as a game reality.

Reality is a "real game", this means that the result of the game is real.

How to make the game ?

The world reality is a "power game" and therefore the game must be about power.

Power has no definition but maybe it is possible to build a game based on position, direction, action and movement instead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-up

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_power_in_international_relations

Maybe a game model can be based on a "place", power and action can be described as "places".

go in to power

go out of power

move to power

remove from power

to seize power

move to action

go out of action

go into action

go in to direction

go out of direction

A "place" can be the basis to other terms :

Position, movement, navigation, orientation, target, map and compass.

action is a place.

action has a direction.

action has a value.

action has a position.

action has an outcome.

The outcome of an action can be a position on a map ( value, amount of power ).

to reach a high position

to change position

central position

move to a new position

A game based on social behavior can be based on :

Power, movement, action.

Mechanics ( leverage, friction, movement ).

Electricity ( current, influence, resistance, capacity, magnetism ).

Navigation and orientation, position, map, compass, values, degrees.

I'm not a game designer and I wish professional game designers will embrace the idea.

A game based news site can be the next big thing in the media industry.

What do you think ?

Shouldn't this be in game-design ?

Anyway, i don't think a game based on news-events would be feasible, if only because the "news" is only "new" for a day to a week,

which is a helluva short time to create some levels/mods.

Hi,

Yes, it should be in game design, can I move it there ?

People "see the world" through a newspaper for many many years, it's time to change it.

News are not news any more, there are moves on a game.

It's a new concept.

How one move ( Syrian rabbles attack ) can affect another player or the all game.

In a news paper/site each news-item is separate from the other, in a game it is a part of a system.

building that system is the big challenge.

Pm a mod.

building that system is the big challenge.

A system based on news-events isn't that hard, but it having any meaning to real world-events is an entirely different question.

So let me ask you this instead, what is the purpose/use/advantage of what you're proposing ?

What is it a player can find in your game that he/she can not find in *any* other game ??

It's about seeing the real world from another place.

Newspapers should be serious but games aren't.

Letting people see the real world through a game can be very interesting.

Normally game designers develop games to work in the way they want them to be.

The big question is how the "real game" works ?

Behavior is normally described as power, actions, values, ways, maps, targets, movement, position, compass.

If you have a game system based on navigation and movement then suddenly the news gets a new meaning.

I think that a game can explain the world better then a news paper/site.

And the most important:

We see games everywhere, they are now big part of our life.

The reality that we see in the newspapers looks like a game.

So, why showing "the game" with a newspaper or a news site ?

What do you want to make? A news site that shows the news via a game or a game that works through the news? Your description is confusing and inspiring.

What is the difference between the two options?

1. A news site that shows the news via a game.

2. A game that works through the news.

For me both options are the same but sounds different.

( English is not my mother tongue )

If I will say a news site then where is the innovation and originality ?

People are used to see the world news on a news site for many years.

So the answer must be a game.

A game that works through the real news is better answer.

Today every news item is on it's own, as a separate and static content.

In a game everything is connected and works like a system.

People want to see something new, not just a new smartphone app or a new computer game, it must be something they never saw it before.

Many game designers search for a good idea, you can be the best game designer but without a good idea you can't make much way.

That is the only way to make a real breakthrough.

Imagine you have a site like Cnn or Foxnews that delivers the world news as a real working game.

The world and players are not fictional but real.

A game which the CIA, China's central bank,  Al-Qaeda, Putin, Asad, Google, are the players.

I have to agree with this. You'd have to realize that you want to create a video game that will have new content, every single day, for any variable of news items, likely more than 5 or so. In order for people to want to "play" this game (since games are meant to be played), they are going to want each of the things they experience in the game to be engaging, entertaining, and challenging to some degree. Unless you had a massive team with you, working throughout most of every day, it wouldn't be possible to create all of the game content you want - at least not if you want "new" content for each day.

There are also some fundamental issues with the concept as well. I don't see you really having a viable audience. The majority of people who are even willing to devote time to keeping up with the news want it as quickly as possible - essentially an information download. Often times just the highlights as well. They don't care about receiving it in an entertaining way because their purpose in going to the news isn't to be entertained, but to learn and to learn fast. For that, videos and written articles with pictures work the best. To create a video game, it would need to be interactive (which websites can - and do - already do). You would likely need some kind of environment for the users to explore in order to "experience" the news through the game-play. Additionally, the content of the news would have to be clearly interpreted via the game experience. All of this takes an immense amount of planning and work to produce. Therefore, again, it doesn't seem viable as a video game format.

News, for a presentation format, lends itself towards websites that are easily navigable (with an interface), straight to the point, sort the news content, provide headline highlights that can be seen quickly and visually, and can be designed so that if someone is interested in a particular news item, they can select it quickly and learn more about it through visual and/or auditory methods.
The same experience as a game would require presenting all of this plus interactive elements which further adds to the workload. If you were to dumb the game down to a model that would actually be logistically possible to produce, it would essentially be such a stripped down experience that it would be virtually identical to any website already available. If that is the case, then you won't get any customers as most people are already comfortable with their current news outlets. You would have to convince them to use your product by demonstrating its superiority over the websites out there.

This is not about making small games about every news item, the concept is completely different.

The idea is to do the heavy work on the system that creates the context for the news.

You don't even have to "touch" the news at all.

The system is the big issue here, the news are part of a system.

The news that we see everywhere are already based on some principles.

With these principles I want to extract a working system.

A game can be based on movement and orientation and about action.

Action is a place  --  "move to action, remove from action, direction of action, stop from action"

To find a place you must use navigation and orientation.

The higher the output of the action ( result ) the better position you get.

To reach a high result from an action ( go out high ) you must have "power", this will come from energy, connections, resources, money.

That is the core of the game, action-direction-height--->  power position you get on the map.

That is the way it works in real life - ( the logic of the real game ).

The game is a power game - what is power any way ?

http://www.unc.edu/~fbaum/teaching/articles/Dahl_Power_1957.pdf

Power is also based on "position".

position is linked also with orientation, navigation.

We see on the news : power, position, values, compass, map, directions, plans, action.

Power is about reaching the center position or to get to a higher position or to be on the first position.

Why not going one ( or two ) steps forward and put all this in a game system ?

The world is a game system and the news are the events/moves in that system.

If newspapers and news sites shows us the world as the "real game" then why not see the world through a real game ?

Anyway, I have to rethink about a better way to explain the idea.

I think I have a better way to explain the idea ( thanks for telling me about the problem ).

There are two computer screens :

   ----------- ------------------
  | CNN | | COMPUTER GAME |
   ----------- ------------------

CNN screen
-----------
Real world news.
The real world reality.
What we see is real.
News-items
Static

COMPUTER GAME screen
---------------------
Game Moves.
Not the world reality.
Everything works together like a system.
What we see is not real.
Dynamic

On CNN you see "world news".
On a game you don't see "game news" but game moves.
The term news doesn't even exist when were talking about games.

Now imagine a third screen that makes a combination of the two screens.

    ------------------------
    | The real game |
    ------------------------

On the third screen we see the real world reality but not through the news.
We see the real world as a game system ( RISK,DIPLOMACY ), as game "moves".
We stay in the same reality but we see it as we are in a game reality.
