Muzzle Flash Billboard

When the enemy shoot, the player should see the muzzle flash, which is usually a billboard

 

However, the player could see his friend firing and he look at the muzzle flash from the side

 

I want the muzzle flash to look like this if the player is looking at it from the front:

and like this if the player is looking from the sides:

[attachment=22444:side.jpg]

 

I think it can be done using Pixel Shader, but I'm not sure how.

Hello.

You may need to look into particles for that type of effect. I managed to get one like your image with a particle system, most of the time it looks ok..

Or make a 3d model with several planes which are rendered additively. One plane should be mostly visible from behind and front and then maybe 2 planes in a cross which will seen from sides / top / bottom. 

 

With a few different textures / rotating the muzzle flash, it'll be more interesting looking.
